~ Amethyst~

One of the most popular varieties of quartz is amethyst. With its colour range from pale, almost pink or clear lilac, to the deep dark shades of purple, what's not to love?  Amethyst can be found all over the world, though what we see most often has been harvested in Brazil.  Here's the science bit: "The presence of manganese in clear quartz produces amethyst, while additional amounts iron content vary the purple colouration". (Thank you Melody!)

As with all things purple, amethyst has always been associated with royalty.  It is regal and commanding while giving a sense of calm and balance.  We often think of amethyst as "the healer", having been used to treat headaches, tooth pain, arthritis and more, it has earned the reputation.  Amethyst has also been known to promote feelings of peace, contentment and serenity. Furthermore, it enhances meditation, promotes prosperity and spiritual growth.

Our aura is made up of color energy and using appropriate color stones we are able to use the vibration they send out to heal and create balance.  In the book "Gems of the Seven Color Rays" (William  C.  Stuber)  we are told that amethyst is the carrier of the violet ray.  Other stones in the violet ray include Rhodonite, Purple Rainbow Fluorite, and Sugalite.   Working with amethyst we are able to increase our ability to "know and speak the truth", the many truths of the universe as well as our personal truths.  Much of these truths come to us in our dreams.  Amethyst encourages lucid dreaming and the ability to connect the subconscious mind with the conscious mind to make the connections between the physical and spiritual aspects of our lives.

From the smallest chip or tumbled stone, to three foot geodes that are dripping with amethyst crystals, I have never met a piece of amethyst I didn't like!  If you've had an extraordinary experience with "The Healer" let us know, we'd love to share your story.  And thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for stones to discuss in this column, we appreciate your input!

~ Selenite~

Because Selenite is said to bring mental clarity and support decision making, I am holding a Selenite wand to my third eye as I attempt to write this column, I need all the help I can get!  Eyes closed, several deep breaths, feeling more focused and grounded, I do believe I can now continue.......

Named for the ancient Moon Goddess Selene, Selenite is found worldwide in its many forms. Hydrous calcium sulfate, the clear, granular layered common mineral known as gypsum is found in large sheets in Utah.  The crystal clear type is found as "blades" in Mexico in a place called "The cave of swords". I'd love to see that!  In the Kalahari Desert, sand fuses with Selenite or form rosettes, or "The Desert Rose".  "Icebergs" and "clusters" are amazing and powerful specimens as is the formation known as the "fishtail" which is full of rainbows adding even more mystery and wonder to Selenite.

Said to promote feelings of harmony, to attract love and assist in reconciliation, Selenite was once exchanged between lovers.   Selenite enhances the third eye and crown Chakra, clearing the auric body, bringing in the white light of our higher selves into our consciousness.  It is used in Shamanic journeying being known as the "universal healer" and also said to have been the "Record Keeping stone" of Atlantis and Lemuria.

As the record keeper, Selenite is the stone to use to access past and future lives. Through meditation, astral travel and dreaming, receiving this information can be valuable to enlighten us during this lifetime.  Gently rubbing the stone releases its energies to assist us in accessing this hidden knowledge within ourselves.

Many message therapists and energy workers enlist Selenite in their practices.  This healing stone is said to benefit the spinal column, skeletal system, muscular and cellular structure.  I often place a piece on my back to ease lower back pain and remove energy blockages.  The combination of the Selenite, deep cleansing breaths and the ritual itself gives me sense of calm and release after a busy day. In our hustle, bustle lives taking a time out is a great gift to Self.  Though I would not suggest skipping a doctor or chiropractor visit.

While researching Selenite I came across several studies being done on its healing properties. The results are suggesting the mineral may reduce or even prevent certain types of cancer, tumors and respitory problems.  I'll be interested to see the progress science makes in this area.

Combining Selenite with other stones and power objects or carved into shapes such as spheres, eggs, hearts, moons, stars, animals or other ancient symbols further heightens the strength of Selenite to direct and focus energy. Although I do believe that any size or shape piece of any stone connects us to all of its kind throughout the universe.

At my shop I carry a line of wands from "Luna Lore". (Visit lunalore.com for info)  NLA . These wands (and pendulums) are handcrafted locally with precision and intention. It's fascinating to watch how people are drawn to these items and the reactions from them.  As I mentioned earlier, massage therapists and people involved in other healing modalities are including Selenite in their work.  Recently, pagan author Dorothy Morrison ("Everyday Magic") purchased one for herself.  Her excitement was thrilling for the creators Julie and Melissa, and myself, validating our feelings about these potent tools.

As with all members of the mineral world, Selenite is here to assist you. I hope you will experiment with it, be open to its energies and enjoy your encounter with this wondrous stone!  As always we would love to hear about your experience.

~ Turquoise~

When we think of turquoise, Native American Indian art and jewelry come to mind immediately, with good reason since tribes in South Western America and Mexico have been finely crafting turquoise and other gems into exquisite jewelry and tools for thousands of years.  Worn by pharaohs and kings, turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones.  The blue of Father Sky combined with the energies of the Earth gives us a stone that provides the ability to become attuned and connected with both the physical and higher planes of our existence.

Turquoise can found in the United States in Nevada, California, Colorado and New Mexico. As well as Australia, Iran, Mexico and Tibet.  Since the 1930's, Nevada has been the major producer of turquoise. "Hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum", the colors of turquoise range from sky blue, brilliant blues, greens and yellow, with brown to black veins throughout,  the shades of pale greens and yellow contain more iron.  The colors often resemble that of Variscite or Faustite and have often been mistaken for and marketed as Turquoise. Chrysocolla is also often mistaken for Turquoise as well, due to its deep green color.  This is something we as consumers (and retailers/suppliers) need to be very aware of.  The stones that are available to us have gone through so much processing long before they reach us.  Today we see many stones that have been "enhanced", sometimes this is done to protect our stones but sometimes they are sold as natural when they are not.  Howlite, for example is often dyed to imitate Turquoise, Howlite, as well as Variscite, Fausite and Chrysocolla are wonderful stones on their own, each deserving of their own column!  When I purchase stones to "work" with, I prefer them to be natural, tumbled and polished is all right with me as is heated, because this is something Mother Nature would have done, given the time!  For some things I'm ok with them being color enhanced if I've been made aware of it, wind chimes made with Agate slices dyed bright colors for example look gorgeous in the sun but a pendant that loses all its color in the shower is not good!  Something else to watch out for is a stone called "Vienna Turquoise"; it’s a glass imitation of Turquoise.   Turquoise is usually coated with wax, oil, or sealed

With acrylic resin to protect it from scratching, particularly for jewelry, so we should avoid any chemicals or hot water that might remove that protective coating and damage the stone.

The metaphysical properties of Turquoise are many, it is said to align all the chakras, specifically the throat, heart and navel chakras.  It is an excellent stone for healing, cleansing and protection.  I read in several places that it has been believed that Turquoise changes color to warn of danger approaching and protects one from falling, especially from horses.  It is also said to bring good fortune and happiness for all who wear it.  It brings peace of mind and protects personal property.  Because of its protective quality, Turquoise is a good choice to use in meditation, vision quest and astral travel to help remain "grounded".  Turquoise also helps balance the Yin/Yang  (male/female) characteristics of our personalities which brings  continued  spiritual and mental clarity and heightened psychic development.  Turquoise is another example of Earth’s powerful gifts, wear it well!

~Diamond~

April’s birthstone, Diamond, is one of Earth's most prized gems.  Brilliance and strength are defined in the name which derives form the Greek word "adamas" meaning "unconquerable" or "invincible".  Diamonds are the hardest, most dense and rarest natural substance known.  Only Diamond can cut or polish Diamond and it has a variety of industrial uses.  Diamonds are a crystalline form of carbon and are formed under tremendous heat and pressure.  Scientific evidence shows that diamonds were formed millions (some billions) of years ago deep below the Earth's surface in molten rock.  Over time they are pushed to the surface in cavities called "kimberlite pipes".  Small opaque diamonds have been found in meteorites and are thought to have been formed from the extreme heat and pressure of the impact.  It is believed that diamonds are in abundance in outer space due to Super Novas.  On Earth, diamonds are found in Africa, known as "The Diamond Continent", Russia, Brazil, Canada and Arkansas, U.S. The largest deposits of rare, fancy pink and red diamonds are found in Australia. The colour palette is colourless, white, black, shades of pink, yellow, red, orange, green, blue and brown.

As "The King of Crystals" diamond symbolizes the Sun and the element of Fire which makes it useful in workings involving legal matters, healing, protection, success, will power, strength, courage, health, purification, healing and to increase Magickal and physical energy.  African Shamans used diamonds in a way similar to how others used quartz crystals.  In the Middle Ages diamonds were used as amulets against demons, the plague, madness and to counteract poison and negative sorcery.  In some cultures women wear a white diamond with a black hue to ensure male children and to cure infertility.  Diamonds are also thought to relieve nightmares and other sleep disorders.  Diamonds have long been thought to attract riches and good fortune as well as a blissful marriage.  With the ability to bend and disperse light, diamonds are wonderful for scrying, meditation, and cleansing while adding additional strength to ritual and prayer.  Many believe that a diamond must be a gift, freely given, rather than purchased by the user to have any metaphysical use or power. Still others believe that the user must personally, carefully select the stone themselves for any Magickal or healing purpose.  There is also debate over the number of cuts or facets the diamond should have to bring forth its powers, some say six, and some say thirty-two facets.  I believe rescuing old diamonds, in what ever form they may be in, from flea markets, yard sales or Gram's attic (and appropriately cleansing and charging them of course) adds another layer of power and intention to a ritual or healing.  It should also be noted here that while some healers who work with stones believe one's intuition and inner guidance are sufficient to select stones and crystals for therapeutic use, others feel strongly that amateurs should avoid diamonds for healing because they are a powerful stone and there are very few that have the perfect set of harmonic vibrations suitable for therapy on humans. For further study on this I recommend "Gems of The Seven Color Rays by William C. Stuber. The high prices of diamonds keep many of us from using them for Magickal purposes, good news, there are suitable substitutes! Clear/white Zircon, Quartz and Herkimer Diamonds are all great choices and possibly acquired more easily.

Also known as "The Stone of Innocence" diamond symbolizes purity, love, harmony, unity, trust, fidelity and consistency in relationships.  It has become the ultimate token of affection and the promise of marriage. As a stone of the White Ray Diamond energizes the third eye and Crown Chakra, inspiring confidence and wisdom and providing courage for Spiritual and Moral convictions.  Diamond is full of Truth and Light; its message to humanity is to treat others as we wish to be treated and encourages honesty and directness with ourselves and others.  Diamond dispels anger and fills the Aura with the loving energy that we came into this world with.

With all these fine attributes, maybe diamonds really are (one of!) a girl's best friends!

~Emerald~

Blessings May Queens and Kings! Rejoice, your birthstone, Emerald, is a magnificent example of the treasures our beautiful Earth holds. Emerald is a symbol of peace, love and life eternal and represents the Earth who is now showing her glory, all is renewed and refreshed; the promise of Spring has been kept.

Emeralds are part of the Beryl family which also includes aquamarine, goshenite, heliodor, morganite and yellow/golden beryl. Another stone called the "red emerald" falls into the beryl category and is known as "Bixbite".  The green color of emeralds is formed when clear beryls contains chromium or vanadium and are found mainly in Columbia, India, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia and Zimbabwe. There is also a mine in North Carolina producing nice gems.  Emeralds were first introduced to the world by the Egyptians over 4,000 years ago, they were popular in Ancient Rome as well. Emerald's value is judged by the shades of green, the more vivid the color, the more valuable the stone. Generally speaking, very pale or very dark emeralds are considered the least valuable.  Perfect natural gems are rare and expensive.  Emeralds of fine colour are not de-valued by inclusions, unlike diamonds whose value goes down considerably.  In the emerald trade, oils, wax fillers and resins are used to penetrate open fissures, filling in these cracks.  This is common practice to minimize damage to the gem which is sometimes brittle. Fortunately, because we use our "third eye" and intuition when selecting stones for healing and Magickal workings none of those issues are of any concern!

Emerald is known as "The Stone of Successful Love".  It promotes a happy home life while instilling a sense of loyalty and sensitivity to ourselves and others. Reducing negativity and bringing harmony to our lives, emerald works to open and activate the heart Chakra. If you want to bring love into your life, buy an emerald and charge it with your Magickal need through visualization and    placing it near a green candle.  Wear or carry the stone somewhere on your body near your heart in a way that cannot be seen by others.  When you meet your future love you will know it wasn't the beautiful jewel that attracted him or her to you. (From Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic, one of my all time favorite resources).

Throughout the world emeralds have been worn for protection and the old magicians wrote that when combined with silver or copper the powers are further enhanced. Emerald's effects are on both the conscious and subconscious levels of the mind, our psychic awareness, connection and trust of our own "inner knowing" is increased and strengthened. Meditation with emeralds helps us to focus and remain centered; guiding us to weed out the practices and tasks we perform that slow our progress toward the path more suitable to our soul's desire and purpose.  In physical healing, the emerald treats disorders of the muscular system, heart, lungs, and spine and soothes the eyes.  The glorious colour alone is enough to soothe my tired eyes!

It is also said that emeralds enhance memory and work well with business or legal matters, bringing good luck, popularity, intelligence and eloquence. With its gentle vibration, emerald reminds us that abundance and prosperity come in many forms and to be grateful for all that we have.

When I think about emeralds, my mind cannot help but conjure images of that special place of enchantment in the land of OZ, The Emerald City. (you didn't really think we would get through this without mentioning it did you?) With the exception of falling houses and never being able to change my shoes, a "City of Emeralds" sounds like a wonderful place to visit!

~ Pearl ~ Moonstone ~ Alexandrite ~

For those born in the month of June, there are three enchanting stones to explore: Pearl. Moonstone and Alexandrite.

The Pearl is a product of a living creature so is not classified as a mineral, though we consider pearls as" stones of the sea".  Fine, expensive pearls are found in the Persian Gulf, Australia and off the coast of Southern India. Most pearls available today are cultured in Japan.  Pearls have been honored for thousands of years for their beauty, mystery, Magickal and healing properties.

Powdered pearls have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to treat epilepsy, heart palpitations,

Hyperactivity and insomnia. Pearls are also said to calm the nerves, improve eyesight, aid in digestion, relieve bloating and ease child birth.  Blended with facial moisturizers, pearl powder is a beauty tonic that heals blemishes, promotes cell regeneration and diminishes wrinkles.

The pearl is a powerful amulet to draw love, luck, money, increase fertility and enhance courage and physical strength.  The pearl is also known as a great protector and worn by swimmers in the South Pacific to keep away sharks.   In India, women wear pearls to ensure a happy marriage.

With grace and beauty the pearl is associated with creative, nurturing feminine energy and all water, lunar and sky goddesses.  With this connection many believe healing and ritual with pearls should be performed at night under the loving guidance of the moon.

Now for the not so enchanting part.  There is some folk lore that says pearls are actually bad luck due to the fact that the oyster is killed to harvest the pearl.  If we choose to wear or work with pearls, let's give thanks and honor to the oyster who sacrificed its life for this treasure. An offering of another stone into the ocean would be appropriate.   If possible, "rescue" pearls from estate sales, flea markets etc...  This helps to reduce world demand and work out some of that Karma.  Also, moonstones are an excellent substitute for pearls.  Read on.

Moonstone is a member of the Feldspar family.  This translucent, milky white stone has a "monoclinic" crystalline structure and is mined in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Australia and the USA.  Along with Cat's eye, Tiger's Eye and Sunstone, (among others) moonstone exhibits the phenomenon known as "chatoyancy".  Which is described as "the property showing movement, illumination or opalescence within the stone itself" (Love is in the Earth-Melody) this makes moonstone wonderful for scrying and meditation.

Moonstone has long been used in Magickal work and is associated with all lunar goddesses, Diana, Selene, and Isis. (To drop a few names!)  Known as "The Travelers Stone" moonstones provides protection while traveling, especially in, over or near water.   Moonstone promotes restful sleep, prophetic dreaming and the ability to understand those dreams.  It teaches us to accept our feelings and emotions as well as the feelings and emotions of others.  While calming the nerves, moonstones show us when and how to "release", restoring us to a peaceful, balanced state with a sharp awareness.   In addition, moonstone is connected to the home, gardening, love, healing, the sea, compassion, fertility and spirituality. An excellent over all psychic stone, use moonstone in ritual, meditation or healing during the waxing moon for best results.

A rare and lovely gem, Alexandrite is a variety of the Chrysoberyl family.  Discovered in the Ural Mountains

Of Russia in the 1830s and named for the Czar Alexander.  In the Orient alexandrite is considered very Magickal and is thought to bring good fortune.  Alexandrite is usually green but will appear red or purple in artificial light.

Alexandrite works deeply with the Third Eye allowing keen insight and psychic awareness. It strengthens the connection to Spirit, opening the flow of unconditional love.  While assisting in releasing past pain, alexandrite shows the way to our greatest possibilities and the promise of change.  Alexandrite enhances creativity, self esteem and a renewed sense and appreciation of nature.

Each unique and beautiful, Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite have much in common.  We do not have to be born in June to benefit from these precious stones.  Try working with one or all of them outdoors surrounded by Nature. Allow yourself to feel the connection to all that is, be well and enjoy the experience.

~Ruby

“The stone of nobility”

Those of us born in the precious summer month of July are blessed to have the Ruby as our designated birthstone. Additional stones for July include carnelian, moonstone, pearl, onyx, beryl and sapphire.  Said to be very lucky for those in the sign of Cancer and Leo, ruby with its projective fire and Sun energy it is connected to Sagittarius, Scorpio and Aries and in the Chinese Zodiac ruby is associated with those born in the year of the Dragon as well.   The word ruby means "contentment" and derives from the Latin word "rubrum" meaning "red".  In the ancient language of Sanskrit, ruby is ratnaraj, "king of stones" or ratnanyaka, "leader of stones" It is also known as "the stone of nobility". These are fitting descriptions of Ruby to be sure.

Technically known as red corundum, aluminum oxide with a trigonal crystalline structure, ruby's red colour comes from traces of chrome and the range is from rose pink to dark, purplish red, and  orange-red. In its rough form ruby appears quite dull, but when cut its brilliance is released and its luster rivals the diamond. Some rubies contain inclusions of rutile known as "asterism" displaying a six pointed star, this is known as "star ruby", and some say this is a spirit living within the stone.  Rubies are mined by panning and each stone is selected by hand. Currently, rubies are found in Sri Lanka, India, North Carolina and Burma.  Burmese rubies are the most clear, deep red, beautiful and pricey on the market today.  Uncut and unpolished rubies are available and affordable for spiritual, metaphysical and Magickal and healing work.  Ruby wands, which are about one to two inches long with one polished end (often showing the asterism), are fascinating to look at and work with. If substitutions for ruby must be made, garnet or red tourmaline are good choices.

Ruby is the primary carrier of the Red Ray and is said to "light the darkness of one's life" conquering darkness on all levels. Stimulating the root and heart chakras, ruby teaches us to see our strength, courage, passion and compassion.  It has an intense high level energy that amplifies all which we send out, opening the heart Chakra to all that is possible.  With ruby, we experience a greater abundance of love through giving.  Ruby facilitates change and assists us in creating and maintaining balance, clearing blockages to increase the life force energies.  Working with ruby should be done with clear and direct intention.   Ruby guides us to express our true selves, giving and teaching selfless and perfect love and understanding to ourselves and others without judgment and to have the courage to trust and follow our intuition to reach our true goals and ambitions. This sometimes leads to having to make unpopular decisions; ruby supports this by enhancing self esteem, confidence, strength and energy.  Rubies are said to be the record keepers of the ancients and are just waiting to share this knowledge.  Ruby is a strong connection to our spirit guides and will lead us to the information we seek.  Rubies are powerful helpers during meditation, astral travel and scrying. Working with rubies can lead us to learning how to express and protect ourselves with clear boundaries and peace of mind.  Ruby discourages violence and protects from "psychic attack”, strengthening our own psychic defenses.

Ruby banishes sadness, negative thoughts, dispels fears and sorrow, promotes restful sleep free of nightmares, enhances energy, concentration and increases physical strength. It has been said that ruby treats fever, heart disorders, weak muscles, increases the body's warmth and counter balances the effects of caffeine and other stimulants. Some folklore tells us that ruby will darken or change color when danger approaches or if the wearer is sick or dying. Touch each corner of your home with a ruby to ward off evil, guard against negativity and damage from storms. Use in the garden to protect plants and trees from lightning, rubies carved or engraved with a dragon or snake are even more effective.  Ruby is a talisman of protection, power and joy, it is said to be the most perfect offering to Buddha in China and Krishna in India. In dream interpretation, to dream of ruby means a good harvest for farmers and success in love, money or business matters.   To dream of losing a ruby is a warning of troubles in the love life.  To further enhance ruby's powers of good luck and protection, wear or carry during the summer season on Fridays and Sundays or if you were born in the five o'clock pm hour of the day (under any sign).  Ruby rings and other amulets should be worn on the left side of the body for best results. Use heart shaped gems to attract love.

They say that having a bit of ruby ensures that wealth will never depart, remembering that riches come in many forms, I hope this is true for all of you.

~Peridot

“Gem of the Sun”

This one is for all you August born darlings with your ever present Sunny dispositions! The treasured gem Peridot is yours to claim!  (Don't forget, that "T" on the end is silent.) Also known as olivine or chrysolite, Peridot is a magnesium iron silicate, its yellow-green colour is caused by the presence of nickel or iron. Natives of Hawaii discovered Peridot in the black sands and thought it to be the tears of Pele, the volcanic goddess. Peridot has been mined as early as 1500BC on Saint John's Island near Egypt. Formed by volcanic activity, Peridot is still found in Hawaii, the Red Sea, and also The Congo, Norway, Burma, Australia and Pakistan and inside meteorites.  Much of the Peridot on the market today is mined by Native Americans on the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona.  The word Peridot comes from the Arabic word "faridat", meaning "gem" and is called the "Gem of the Sun" because it shines so brilliantly in the desert sun, just as you shine in the blessed rays of the August sun.

Early Egyptian priests drank from vessels fashioned of Peridot and believed this would draw them closer to the Goddess Isis. Peridot, set in gold rings to enhance its power, were worn to protect against evil and to relieve depression.   Peridot is also called the "evening emerald",   legends say that because the Peridot glowed so brightly miners searched for the gems at night, marked the location and returned during the day to retrieve them.

In healing practice, powdered Peridot has been used as a remedy for asthma, insect bites, and to cure thirst caused by fever.  Peridot has also been used to treat disorders of the heart, spleen, liver, intestinal tract and to strengthen eyesight.  Used during birth it stimulates contractions and the opening of the birth canal.  It has also been helpful in calming nerves and relieving night terrors.

A symbol of strength, vitality and new growth, Peridot stimulates the heart and solar plexus chakras; it is a stone that inspires happiness and feelings of joy. It heals the ego, lessens jealousy and anger, encouraging us to see the light in others and to let them know of our gratitude for their efforts.   I am grateful for all the "Peridot People" in my life, I hope you are surrounded by them too because no one can light up a room like they can, they are truly Gems of the Sun.

~ Opal ~

Opals have been a favorite and cherished gem for as long as six thousand years, archeologists have discovered artifacts in Kenya dating back at least that far.  This enchanting stone associated with those born in October, is known as "The Stone of Happy Dreams and Changes". During this time of tremendous changes on the Earth and in our consciousness, it may be a good time to get to know the Opal and embrace its gifts of awareness, peace and hope for the future.

There are varying opinions on the origin of the word itself, some believe it is from the Sanskrit "upala" meaning "precious or valuable stone", yet others believe it derives from the Greek "opallios" meaning "colour change", or perhaps the Roman "opthalmus" for "the eye" or "eye stone". Whatever the origin of its name, the opal has been a valued symbol of purity and wealth to many cultures.  Opals have been found in the tombs of The Aztecs, Native American Indian Shaman used it for ceremony, dreaming and vision quests, Australian Aborigines believe that "The Creator took the colours of the rainbow and put them into the stone".  In the far East it is believed the opal protects from illness and holds the gift of prophecy, and for the Romans, the opal is second only to the emerald in value and will bring great wealth to the wearer if they are pure of heart. Ancient sorcerers, witches and wizards held the opal in high regard for its magickal and healing powers, particularly the Black Opal.

The opal has been mined in India, Mexico, Central Africa, Czechoslovakia and parts of the US and Canada. Since around the 1890s' Australia has provided most of the opals on the world market. The formations and colour range of the opal are vast and mysterious. There is some folk lore tells us that it was once believed that "The Storm God was jealous of The Rainbow God and broke the rainbow so the pieces fell to the Earth and became part of the opal". But, the mystery was solved with the invention of the electron microscope, under which can be seen that the opal is made up of millions of three dimensional spheres and it is the pattern of these tiny spheres, and the spaces between them, that determines the diffraction of light, thus the colours. I rather like the "Storm God-Rainbow God theory myself!

At one time the opal was thought to be very bad luck. There are a few superstitions surrounding the stone.  Some believed an opal engagement ring would curse the bride with sorrow and widowhood, that white opals were good luck but black opals were bad luck. But, both were very good luck if you were born in October, for everyone else all opals would bring great misfortune, never buy one for yourself or accept one as a gift! There are a few ideas why the opal fell out of favor with the public, one being that the diamond merchants of the time realized the beauty of the opal and saw this as a threat to their livelihood and actually started the "bad luck" rumors.  For shame! Another idea is that the reputation came from the novel "Anne of Geierstien" by Sir Walter Scott wherein the opal was described as changing colours according the good or bad fortune of the heroine. So, it seems the book critics of the day started that one! Today, the opal is revered, as it should be.

The opal is considered to be a very Spiritual stone and is connected to feminine and Lunar energies, enhancing intuition, imagination and creativity. Opal reminds us to enjoy life, become less stressed and broadens our perspective by relieving blocks, allowing us to be open to future possibilities, unlimited potential. The opal is useful during astral projection, meditation, past life and dream recall, and to develop psychic abilities. They say that the opal will change colour with the intensity of the user's energies. It is believed that the opal works very well for enhancing the memory, strengthening the eye sight, conquering addictions, breaking fever, stimulating the circulatory system and dispersing infection.

There are numerous types of opals, each have their own additional characteristics, here are just a few:

White:  Crown Chakra, clarity, inspiration, calmness.

Black:  Grounding, soul searching, strengthens bones.

Pink:  Heart Chakra, love, kindness, gentleness.

Blue:  Throat Chakra, courage, confidence, communication

Green:  Relaxation, meditation, control.

Red:  Balance, positive thoughts, reduce hostility.

Fire:  Strength, energy, purpose.

~ Topaz and Citrine ~

Colours of the setting Sun

It seems fitting as we enter the dark time of the year that the birthstones of November mirror the colours of the setting sun. At this time, our minds and hearts turn to thoughts of hearth and home, comfort foods, warmth and preparations for the long winter.  The golden yellows of Topaz and Citrine are the perfect touches to the Autumn season that gives the blessings of spectacular colour all around us, the Magick of nature.

Citrine is a form of quartz with a colour range of pale to bright yellow, orange, and reddish brown. Citrine and Amethyst are sometimes called "Sister Stones" because Citrine is formed when Amethyst is subjected to extremely high temperatures, this is a natural occurrence. The unity of Amethyst and Citrine can be seen in the stone Ametrine, and the combination of the two makes for a wonderful stone to work with, but that's another column! It should be noted that some of the Citrine on the market has been lab treated/heated, its common practice in the jewelry business to heat  Citrine to intensify its colour. Also, because Citrine is affected by heat it is not recommended to leave Citrine (particularly  jewelry) in direct sunlight for long periods because the colour could be altered permanently. I do think this would be an interesting experiment though!  It is believed that Citrine is one of few minerals that does not hold negativity and therefore never needs to be cleansed or cleared the way other stones do. Connected with the Sun and Fire, Citrine is a symbol of hope and strength. When working on the Root and Solar Plexus Chakras, use Citrine for great results opening and energizing these areas. The energy of Citrine is one of comfort, peace, warmth and love, helping to eliminate fear and anger at the deepest levels of the soul.  Working with Citrine also promotes feelings of joy and happiness, optimism and renewed hope, the knowledge that each day is a new beginning full of promise.

The Sanskrit word for Fire, " topas", so appropriately named, the majestic, magickal Topaz.     For the ancient Greeks, the Topaz gave great strength, for the Egyptians, it was seen as  a gift from Ra, the Sun God. In Africa, it was a potent tool used in healing and Shamanic rituals.  For us, according to Melody, it is "the stone of true love and success in all endeavors".  The golden  Topaz is a protective stone, used to guard against accidents and injury, disease, sudden death, negative Magick, jealousy and madness.  Topaz dispels negativity, fear, anger, depression, greed and other unsettling emotions. Topaz draws to us health, love, friendship, courage, creativity and confidence in our own decisions, relieving doubt and instilling trust in the Universe that all situations will work out for the good of all.  It is believed that Topaz (and Citrine) attract money and wealth but should never be used purely for selfish gain. Work with Topaz to relieve insomnia, nightmares and sleep walking to provide a restful, rejuvenating night sleep. Topaz has a calming, relaxing energy that brings feelings of joy, peace and faith. Topaz is seen in many colours, the gold, and also pink, lavender, green, blue, white, brown, and even multi-coloured, each having additional  properties.

I hope you invite Citrine and Topaz into your life, or give them as gifts to loved ones born in November, and experience the warm and  loving energies of these two beautiful gems.

It seems nearly all the religions and cultures of the world have some mention of birthstones.

The use of stones is rich in  history, myth and folklore throughout the world.  Ever since gemstones

were discovered people have believed they hold mystical, magickal powers.  Our birthstones have

been worn for good luck,  healing and self discovery.  Most believe birthstones have their origin,

around 1300 BC, in the book of Exodus with the Breastplate of Aaron which carried  twelve

stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.  Around the 18th century the stones began to be

associated with specific months of the year and people would own all twelve,  this began to shift again

as people chose to wear only the stones associated with their birth month, which is what we do today.

The most accepted and widely used list of birthstones was adopted in 1912 by The American Jeweler's

Association.  Depending on your personal preference and what you feel drawn to, you can chose birthstones

by month, color, astrological sign, Chinese zodiac, modern, traditional, mystical, Ayurvedic, Arabic, Hebrew,

Hindu, Roman or planetary correspondences.

Over the past year we have been "all around the Zodiac" looking at the metaphysical properties of

the modern, astrological and alternative birthstones as well as some interesting lore and history.  Many

of you have been following along and I’ve enjoyed and appreciated your feedback.  For those who may

have missed some of the columns, they can be found on our web site, along with some of the charts listed

above for cross reference.  In the coming year we will continue to explore more of "Mother Earth's Treasury"

and your suggestions are always welcome.

For quick, easy reference, here is a list of the modern birthstones and some of the basic properties:

January - Garnet-Health, commitment, friendship.                      July - Ruby-Health, wealth, knowledge.

February - Amethyst-Healing, strength, peace.                           August - Peridot-Happiness, protection, balance.

March - Aquamarine-Courage, compassion, truth.                   September - Sapphire-Joy, peace, prosperity.

April - Diamond-Love, harmony, awareness.                                  October - Opal-Creativity, faithfulness, connection.

May - Emerald-Loyalty, bliss, love.                                                      November - Topaz-Love, success, joy.

June - Pearl-Innocence, purity, integrity.                                            December - Turquoise-Wisdom, trust, kindness.

~Apache Tears~

Blessings of the New Year to everyone!  At this time, many of us set our intentions for the upcoming year, our thoughts turn to how we might improve our lives, and the lives and experiences of our fellow human beings. Do we need a bit more exercise, more "Self" time, more nurturing, a more Spirituality connected life?   Do we need to release old and outdated patterns that no longer serve us?  Do we have deep  sorrow and pain that must be allowed to surface and be processed? Or  do we feel tremendous love, gratitude, thanks and blessings that must be shared and expressed to those around us?  Or some combination of these thoughts, and more? The world of crystals and stones is here to assist us in any and all of these efforts.

The black, semi-transparent Apache Tear is volcanic glass, and a member of the Obsidian family native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States.  Many of you may be familiar with legend of the Apache Tear,  it is said that one day a party of Apache Indians were ambushed by cavalry, outnumbered, and low on arrows. They fought bravely but were forced to the top of a high mountain, refusing to be taken captive, they leaped as one from the cliffs.  The grief stricken Apache women shed torrents of tears which became petrified and turned to stone.  Apache Tears work on the first, second and fourth Chakras, and are healers of grief and sorrow.

They  uncover deep, frozen emotions, assisting to process and relieve these feelings while bringing forth a sense of comfort.  They are protective and grounding stones and help to shield the aura from negative energies.   Apache Tears connect the base of the spine to heart of the Earth providing inner vision,  release of self-limiting barriers, and dispersing  un-loving thoughts.  They  enhance clarity  and insight as to which direction or action to take in a situation.

Obsidian provides a general sense of overall  well-being,  emotionally and physically. And along

with the Apache Tear is seen in many colours and sheens with numerous metaphysical properties:

Snowflake: Insight, spiritual guidance, balance.

Peacock: Awareness, protection, insight.

Rainbow: Light, love, recovery.

Gold Sheen: Expression, healing, personal power.

Purple Sheen: Enlightenment, clarity, psychic ability.

Silver Sheen: Awareness, perseverance, patience.

Note: This year I would like to add a section of this column dedicated to your experiences. So many of you have talked with me about your love of and work with stones and crystals. I'd love to hear more and share your personal experiences with our readers.

Stop by, call, drop a note or e-mail  with your story, we will not print  more than first names or any other personal information, unless requested.

~ Purple Sage Agate ~

Recently a customer, Sarah, who also happens to be a friend, came by with an absolutely

beautiful stone bead, unsure of what it might be. Sarah was so drawn to this stone bead it didn't matter to her what it was or what its metaphysical properties may be, she has kept it with her and found comfort from it since she found it, or it found her.  Sarah acquired this bead at a shop in northern Maine but could not remember the name of the shop, I would share that info if I had it because believe me I would have run up there to get a few of these beads myself!  This stone bead is about two inches long, sort of oval shape, the colours  all swirl around and through it  and include black, white, a bit of yellow-gold and purple, purple, purple!  It's very highly polished and my first impression was that it may be colour enhanced, you know, dyed, fake, a trick. She did have one clue on what it may be, she was told it was possibly purple lace agate, we had never heard of that, blue lace agate yes, but not purple.  So with a little research, flipping through books and on line, we identified it as Purple Sage Agate.  Agates are found many colours and formations, and there it was, right in Melody's "Love is in the Earth" stone book (and others too). Why have I not seen this before?  How could I have I missed it?  Where has it been all my life? So gorgeous, so mystical,... so purple!

I think we've established what Purple Sage Agate looks like, so on to the metaphysical properties. We'll just have to trust the experts on this, not having had a chance to work with it myself, yet.  According to Melody, this stone has only recently been discovered in Arizona, this book was written in 1995, but the writers of The Book of Stones, which came out in Fall 2005 still consider it fairly new to the market and is now  being found in eastern Oregon as well. They tell us Purple Sage Agate is a member of the Quartz family and the colours range from light lavender to purplish black and will take a high polish, you bet it does!  In The Book of Stones,  we are told this stone has a gentle, healing vibration and is highly Spiritual as well as grounding  and protective.  This stone cleanses, strengthens and protects the aura allowing energy to flow while  guarding against negativity.  Purple Sage Agate is said to be useful  in connecting with our individual Spirit Guides and Angels, assisting to open our consciousness to gain insight and guidance while releasing the  resistance and fear of higher states of consciousness, in a gentle, loving and "supportive" way.  Melody describes this agate as a "stone of completion", one that assists in achieving our goals and desires with a relaxed energy and ease And, she tells us this stone  enhances self- love and the ability to be our true selves, while finding deep understanding and sympathy for others.  Melody also says this is a stone that assists us to reach heightened sensitivity and enlightenment and is one that activates the Throat and Crown Chakras. Let me tell you, I am on the search for this lovely stone.

There are many other types of Agate, each having their own special attributes. Here are a few, they are not all purple, but hey, we won't hold that against them!

Angel Wing-Concentration, Serenity, Crown Chakra.

Blue Lace-Communication, Awareness, Throat, Third Eye and Crown Chakras.

Fire-Creativity, Energy, Root and Solar Plexus Chakras

Holly Blue-Awareness, Intuition, Throat and Crown Chakras.

Dendritic-Transformation, Growth,  Activates All Chakras.

Moss-Grounding, Balance, Root and Heart Chakras.

~ The Enchanting Quartz Crystal ~

At the time of this writing I have just completed  our two day workshop "Becoming The Human Crystal" with Naisha Ashian, co-author of The Book of Stones. My head is still spinning ( a bit out of control I might add!) attempting to process  all the information we received during this intensive two days. Plus an amazing day with Naisha in the shop providing readings with her incredible insight and powerful Crystal Ally Cards, of which she is the creator.  Needless to say there is much to absorb, sort and integrate into practice. My relationship with,  and  study of crystals and stones continues, with several long standing theories and concepts reopened, to be considered in a different way, with  an even more open mind and more importantly an open heart . This month we will revisit the ever faithful, enchanting and magickal Quartz crystal.

Quartz is the most common mineral on this planet and has been used by nearly every original people for  healing and religious ceremony since the dawn of time.  The ancient Japanese believed it was formed from the breath of a white dragon and represented perfection. The Aborigines  used quartz crystals in rain rites, the  Cherokee used it as a stone of divination. It has been a reliable and useful partner for the shaman, the healer and the mystic. Technology proves the powers of quartz, it is used in radios, watches and the like. Science has shown us the energy of quartz, it is piezoelectric, "it transforms mechanical energy into electromagnetic energy".
Quartz has proven itself to be adaptable, flexible and unwavering in it's commitment to the human race, it is anxious to help, to heal and to assist in our every endeavor, on the physical, emotional and spiritual levels. We need only ask and do the required work, programming, clearing and cleansing.  Quartz is known to store, amplify, transmit and transmute energy. It is a mighty tool for manifesting needs and desires, bringing  clarity, higher states of consciousness, communication with spirit guides,  heightening meditation, dreaming and healing. It opens all chakras and will enhance the energies of other stones it is paired with.  Use quartz to inspire creativity, retrieve information from past lives and to re-form old patterns from the current life.  Enlist quartz for clearer psychic visions and to bring balance and harmony to your environment and as a protective talisman.

All quartz crystals have the above mentioned characteristics. The properties will vary according  to the area from  which they came.  And they change over time, exhibiting new cracks, crevices, lightening, darkening, pieces fall away, they heal themselves.  Choosing a quartz crystal is not about appearances,  how clear it is, or how perfect to the eye it may be, but about the energy it exudes. Their beauty is undeniable, quartz crystals may be clear, cloudy, veiled, smooth or rough. Each is special and useful with its own unique personality and  properties. It is a personal preference on the appearance, try selecting with eyes closed, just sense the energy and trust the intuition to guide you to the correct crystal for the purpose at hand. Additionally, the size of the crystal has no bearing on its power, when you are working with any stone you are connecting to every piece of its kind on the entire planet. Just absorb that thought for a moment, connected to every speck of that stone on the entire planet, wow, imagine  what the positive influence of that kind of power could be.  Imagine. That power being imagined, try doing a crystal  lay out, all by intuition, and focus the best, highest vibration of love possible to the Earth and her people at this time of greatest Love and Light. Trust that your intentions for Peace on Earth, healing and justice for all people is being amplified and transmitted from your crystals to all the other quartz throughout the world.  Imagine other individuals and groups transmitting the same thoughts and intentions all over the world as well.  Imagine. "You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one".

Imagining Peace on Earth and wishing you and yours Happy, Joy Full Holidays!

2007

~ Clearing your Stones~

Here we are, another year over and a new one just begun.  I hope yours is off to a happy, healthy, bountiful start.  The new year is a great time to do a bit of clearing and cleansing, the physical and mundane as well as the metaphysical and magickal.  Our stones and crystals could probably use some attention, clearing and recharging  at this point.  As the guardians of these precious gifts of the earth it is our job to see that it gets done.  There are many ways to do this, as we've discussed before, but a bit of a refresher course is never out of order.  Which method should you use?  There is no right or wrong,  find the one that resonates best with you. Combining a few techniques can be quite effective and brings to the process your own unique perspective and experience.
With the winter weather upon us taking our crystals out of doors is probably not on the agenda unless we are fortunate to have one of wonderful, sunny, warm days. If we do, bring all the stones needing a clearing right outside on a tray lined with cloth or some soft material and let them have a day in the sun. Finish off with an evening in the moonlight, if it's too cold, the window sill will do fine. Creating sacred space for the  ritual of crystal clearing is good idea, the intention and prayer is a powerful part of the clearing. Another way is to run the stones through the smoke of incense or sage. Your favorite incense or one that corresponds to the need or desire that the stones are being charged for will do well. White, eastern or dessert sage will do nicely as will a  smudge mix consisting of a combination of sages, pine cones, and tobacco.  Clearing stones under running water is very effective, weather permitting, a lake, river or the ocean is wonderfully powerful.  This time of year a dripping icicle would do and I imagine the energy could be quite pleasing, I think I'll try it out this winter. Placing the stones in a bowl (non-metallic) of  water or salted water, is fine too,  just use caution on the types of stones when using water to cleanse them  as some will all but dissolve or at the very least change appearance when in placed under water, selenite for example should not have contact with water.  A bowl of sea salt or regular salt is quite potent to cleanse stones. When using this method use the same caution as with the water except in this case watch for soft stones as they could be scratched by the salt particularly if it is of the coarse variety.  But gently placing them in the bowl should be alright and never fear, even if the outward appearance of a stone is altered, its properties will not be affected.  Many energy workers use the technique of "toning" or "sounding", this can be done with bells, chimes or your own voice, similar to chanting a mantra. This method has been found to be exceptionally powerful for some.  Just hold the crystal in your hands in front of you and let the sound flow, you could amaze yourself.  Maybe you are good at visualizing,  let yourself go into a light meditative state and visualize white or golden light surrounding the crystal and clearing away all unneeded energy.  Other examples for clearing include placing the stones in a bowl of flowers, brown rice or soil.  Setting stones and crystals on top of, or surrounded by, other cleared stones is another favorite.
There are numerous ways to clear, cleanse, program and awaken crystals and each can be meaningful and effective. Many of these techniques are steeped in tradition and bring a deep sense of connection to Spirit and the Divine that lives in each of us.  Again, try out a few different methods, combine some of the tried and true with some you come up with on your own.  Create your own tradition, allow your  creative side to shine through, trust your own judgment, listen to your crystals and most importantly enjoy the journey.

~ Sugilite ~

Sugilite is one of those stones that grabs your attention at first sight due to it's amazing colour and
beauty. I've often said that it is not the look of a stone that is important, but the energy it has to offer. Many times a stone that is not outwardly what we might consider beautiful has the most incredible energy once we give it some time, attention and become open to its vibration.  Sugilite for me is a stone that is outwardly beautiful and I am immediately drawn to it merely for it's colour.  Big surprise here, it's purple. Actually, the colour ranges are pink, lilac, violet, to deep purple, often banded or specked with black, occasionally translucent.  Sugilite is most commonly seen in smooth, polished tumbled form as small specimens, spheres, jewelry or other talismans.  A large portion of the Sugilite available today is mined in South Africa.  It is also found in Canada and Japan where, according to Bob Simmons in The Book of Stones, it was discovered by and named for Japanese geologist Ken ichi Sugi  in 1944.
We know that our dream time and meditations can be an important part of our spiritual path. Dreams and the visions we see during meditation, through the universal language of symbols, can assist us in discovering our true purpose on earth and reveal the way in which we should travel.  Sugilite is a powerful yet comforting companion of the dream time.  Invite Sugilite to enhance and clarify the messages of your dreams, night dreams as well as day dreams, for it is here that answers to those questions of "who am I?" or " what am I supposed to be doing ?" lie.   Meditate with Sugilite prior to sleep and allow its gentle energy to flow, you may awaken with a clearer message and direction of this life's path and your soul's desire and purpose.  Each day and each new bit of insight and information is one step closer to fulfilling that purpose.  Sugilite also assists by enveloping us with a sense of courage and hopefulness which in turn gives us the strength, on every level, to continue on the chosen path.  The colours of this stone, the purple shades and the black, allows Sugilite to connect the ethereal visions and maintain a sense of grounding to the earth plane helping to bring our innermost desires to  fruition.  Because it is of such a calm and loving vibration, Sugilite also offers assistance with sleep issues such as insomnia and nightmares.
As a stone of the Violet Ray, Sugilite is a powerful one for healing in addition to deep psychic and spiritual connection and development. It has a potent protective and purifying energy and aids in the protection of the auric field.  This shield of protection from negativity allows us to continue on a spiritual path for our very best and highest good, for ourselves, humanity and the planet.  Sugilite protects us from the influence of outside negative forces and our own inner negative thought patterns, all of which  inhibit our personal growth, physical  health and general sense of well-being.  Sugilite offers support and healing on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels.  When we open to the energy of Sugilite and let it fill our aura with its high frequency light, we can trust it to support us as we  proceed on our path of enlightenment with confidence and resolution.

~ Bronzite ~

At first glance, bronzite may not demand your attention, it's just a plain, humble little brown stone.  However, closer inspection reveals a lovely specimen of bronze shades, spotted black and flecked with gold tones.  A warm, kind, loving energy is revealed as well. It is still humble, but emits an aura of subtle power and purpose.

Bronzite, mined mainly in Brazil, is known as a "stone of courtesy".  The energy of bronzite teaches us to pursue personal goals while remaining impartial but loving toward others.  Bronzite encourages us to take the actions necessary for beneficial change in our lives. While making these life changes bronzite reminds us to continue to treat others with politeness, kindness and love. We are reminded to walk our chosen path with honesty, integrity and principle. Transformation can be achieved smoothly and harmoniously with the assistance of bronzite.

Also known as "the stone of focused action",  bronzite motivates us to take action, to "do" not simply "be". We can create change with focus, control and certainty.  It gives us the ability to think ahead, to plan ahead, to take charge of our lives with clarity and confidence in our decision making process. Bronzite inspires us to be brave, to trust, and to enjoy and embrace the process of transformation.  Bronzite encourages us to believe in our own wisdom, to trust our  judgment and good old fashioned common sense.   It strengthens our will, decisiveness and resolve.  This stone works with the solar plexus chakra, instilling a feeling of  an "I can" attitude.

Bronzite is of the Earth element and is excellent for staying "grounded".  It gives a deep sense of calmness, serenity and relaxation, relieving feelings of restlessness.  Bronzite also reminds us of the value of being in service to others, without judgment. We can assist others with that same sense of clarity, confidence and resolution. Physically, sources say bronzite relieves muscle tension, and can be used to treat anemia and iron deficiency. Not bad for a plain, humble little brown stone.

~Azurite~

"Stone of Heaven"

As its name implies, azurite is a stone of an incredible azure blue colour. Found in the U.S.,
China, Australia, Russia and Chile, azurite is a copper based carbonate mineral and  forms mainly in masses, nodules and occasionally prismatic crystals. Azurite is often found in combination with malachite, another copper based mineral. Lovely specimens of azurite/malachite have been mined in Arizona. In many ancient cultures, including Native American Indians and the Mayans, azurite was held in high regard and treated as sacred.  Azurite was considered  a symbol of one's status in the tribe.
Azurite is known as a "stone of heaven" because it connects us to our higher self, our " heavenly self", to the Divine.  As we  expand our psychic abilities in an attempt to further our development on the  Earth plane and reach higher states of consciousness and well being, azurite is an excellent assistant.  Utilizing the energy of azurite opens, expands and enhances the third eye,  showing us the information and knowledge that resides there, often from past lives.  This allows us to recognize and use that information to our best and highest purpose with absolute honesty.  Azurite shows us the information in a clear and concise manner, revealing the truth without our ego and human judgments getting in the way.  Azurite will show us what areas of our lives need attention and provide the insight and strength to make the necessary changes to further our growth at this time.  Azurite also magnifies our self confidence which in turn will contribute to feeling increased self assuredness regarding which direction to take next on our personal path of development.  Azurite encourages us to continue on our path without fear and in greater alignment with Source, The Creator, God/Goddess, All That Is.  Azurite also reminds that we are on a journey not only for our own development but for "the greater good".
Azurite is a stone of the Blue Ray, which has much to do the journey of the mind, mental function and the opening of the third eye, as seen in the qualities spoken of above.  Additionally, azurite is in tune with
the physical and ethereal bodies.  We often hear of "psychic attack", situations where it is felt that someone else's energy has overcome or blocked our own, inhibiting us in achieving our goals.  Azurite can be helpful to alleviate and clear out this type of energy.  It provides a protective barrier of the aura and has been said to "seal holes" in the aura. Though this stone is mainly associated with the third eye and crown  chakras, it is attuned with all the chakras.  Azurite has been known to assist in clearing blockages of energy, allowing a free flow of energy throughout the body. Azurite assists in the alignment of each of the major chakras through directed focus.  In healing azurite has been used to relieve headaches, improve mobility and treat bone disorders.  Try meditating with azurite, allow its calming, relaxing energy to envelop you, slip into a quiet state of inner reflection and contemplation.  Enjoy the journey.

~Dioptase~

Release, Release, Release!

The emerald green hydrous copper silicate mineral Dioptase is considered the most effective healer of the heart chakra at this time.  The colour can be so intense it is thought to be even more beautiful than the emerald itself for many.  Also seen in shades of bluish green, Dioptase is found in the United States, Chile, Russia, Peru and most notably Africa.  It is usually seen as single or mass crystals often on a matrix.  Dioptase is somewhat rare and when available it can sometimes be at considerable expense.

Dioptase carries with it the absolute genuine energy of the Green Ray.  It promotes and stimulates the healing of the heart at the most beneficial level, physically, emotionally and spiritually.  The message of Dioptase is healing through forgiveness and compassion.  When we fully heal the heart from past trauma, be it from our current life experience or that of past lives, only then can we receive all that the universe has to offer.  We all want to live peaceful, happy, abundant lives.  Healing at the deepest levels of the heart is when we become truly healed and able to open the heart and live to our greatest potential.  Dioptase is a valuable assistant in this endeavor.  Dioptase assists us to see that through forgiveness we may move forward in life with our hopes and dreams in tact and with intensified physical and emotional energy to achieve our goals.  We also experience the realization of the power of our own resources, talents and inner strength.   Releasing old  patterns, again from this life or previous lives, is the path to healing and creating the reality we yearn for.  We also must remember that forgiveness does mean that we condone abusive or hurtful acts on the part of others, but instead is the path to letting go and moving forward.  When we continuously replay old, useless patterns with others, family, co-workers, friends etc, we cannot move forward and achieve harmony, balance and contentment.  We must release these karmic patterns with love, compassion and forgiveness to allow all involved to heal and move forward to a life of  happiness and balance.  With the help of Dioptase we are able to cut the cords and attachments that are holding us back from achieving the rich full lives we deserve and desire. To get there we must release, release, release!

Dioptase is also very beneficial for meditation on a regular basis.  It clears the auric field of negative feelings such as anger and envy.  Additionally Dioptase is considered one of the most useful stones to attract prosperity.  Clearing the aura of negative energies assists in the attraction of abundance of all that is good and positive, including wealth.  The best way to attract the prosperity we desire is to release those old patterns, negative inner dialog and unhealthy roles we play with others.  This clears the way for the universe to bestow its abundance upon us.  Begin a healing journey with Dioptase and make these few words part of your daily practice; Release with forgiveness and compassion.

~ Magick of Metals ~

This month in "Mother Earth's Treasury" we will veer off course a little.  I thought it would be interesting to have a look at some of the metals we can incorporate into our work with stones and crystals.  Just like studying crystals, study and experimentation with metals can be a lifelong pursuit.  Here we will take a brief look at some of the metals, their metaphysical properties, folk lore and how they may be added to the work we are doing.  Much of the information below is from the book "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Crystal, Gem and Metal Magic" by Scott Cunningham.   Written in 1998, this is one of my all-time favorite resources and I refer to it often.

Through out history people have been fascinated  by metals, how they are formed and what magickal influences they contain.  Metals have been as important as stones, crystals, candles and herbs in ritual and meditation by shamans, magicians and others since the beginning of time.  Metals can be added or  avoided in ritual depending on the need, intent of the work at hand and desired effects.   When about to enter into the meditative state many people remove all metal jewelry, because as with stones, metals have their own unique vibration.  Additionally, just like stones, metals can be charged or programmed with specific intentions and energy.  It is believed that all the metals have associations with particular herbs, planets, elements, Gods and Goddesses, stones and other metals as well.  Cross referencing the associations can be helpful to determine what metals to incorporate into our rituals or meditations to lend more power to achieve the desired results.  Metals possess either "projective energy" or "receptive energy".  Projective energy is "electrical, forward-moving, active and protective".  Receptive energy is "magnetic, soothing, attracting energy often used for meditation, promoting love, calm and quiet" ( these definitions taken from Cunningham's glossary).

~ Brass is connected to the element of Fire, the Sun, gold and has projective energy.  Wear or keep brass in your environment to guard against negativity and to attract prosperity. Brass has also been used to relieve stomach aches and stop nosebleeds.  Brass can be used as a substitution for gold. I have a particular affinity for brass and find it to have a warm, friendly, pleasing energy.

~Copper is connected to the element of Water, the planet Venus, quartz, emerald, the herb mimosa  and has receptive energy.  It is associated with the Goddess Venus as well as Ishtar,  Aphrodite and Aasarte.  Copper is said to stimulate healing, balancing the body's polarity and flow of energy.  As we know copper conducts electricity and therefore is often used to make wands, which direct energy as needed. I have found

copper to be one of the most effective "grounding" tools. When feeling a bit scattered, chaotic or stressed, just hold a copper sphere in each hand and breathe, you'll be amazed how quickly you can become clearer and calmer. Another good one is to "plant" a copper tube or pipe in the yard, when feeling stressed go outside and hold onto the tube for a few minutes, works wonders! I learned that one from author M.R. Sellars who swears by it.  Copper is also said to attract love and abundance. Copper pennies were kept in the kitchen of the home to attract money to the household.

~Gold is connected to the element of Fire, the Sun, several stones including, lapis, sunstone and topaz. It is connected with lodestones, pyrite and has projective energy.  Since ancient times gold has been  linked with the divine and thought to be the highest offering to the Gods. Gold is often seen adorning altars and sacred spaces.  It has been the symbol of wealth in many cultures for centuries.  Magicians, Druids, High Priests, Priestesses and Christians have employed gold to bring protection, courage, health and wealth.  Gold reduces stress, has been used to support the nervous system, treat arthritis, heart conditions and digestive problems. Gold clears the chakras and auric field of negativity and is useful to activate the third eye and crown chakras .

~Silver is connected to the element Water, the Moon,  pearl, moonstone and other stones and has a receptive energy.  It is also associated with all lunar and night Goddesses such as Diana, Isis and Selene.  Silver was one of first metals to be discovered by humans and has been offered to the Goddesses of the Moon in the form of crescents, bells and other sacred objects since the dawn of time.  Silver is considered to be a powerful amulet to enhance psychic awareness and ability, prophetic dreaming and scrying.  Silver reflects negativity from the wearer and is often used as a protection charm when traveling. It is also added to many rituals to draw love and money.  Silver cleanses the aura and the physical body assisting to eliminate toxins.

These are just a few of the metals to consider adding to ritual or meditation practices.  Use metals alone or combine them with your favorite stones and crystals.  Experiment, play and enjoy the process.

~Danburite~

~Spiritual Awakening~

Discovered in and originally named for Danbury, Connecticut, Danburite crystal specimens are usually found as four sided, chisel shaped terminations.  This calcium borosilicate has a colour range of white or colourless, pale to wine shades of pink and yellow and occasionally blue.  Depending on the location in which it is mined, when cut it can be a brilliant golden or clear gem.  Currently the area producing the most abundance of Danburite is Mexico.  There are also deposits in Russian, Japan, Burma, Bolivia and Madagascar.

One word to sum up the energy of Danburite is "Spirit".  Danburite is Spirit in physical form.  Danburite reminds us of the presence of beings of a higher vibration that are just beyond the veil that separates us.  Angels, faeries and other Light Beings are anxious to share their love, companionship and guidance when we are ready to see and hear them.  Danburite has a gentle, calm, peaceful energy and its vibration assists us in breaking through that veil to connect with the higher beings waiting to support us in our spiritual awakening.  We are gently encouraged to connect with these beings, as well as our own higher selves, with the vibrations of this lovely and joyful stone.  As busy stressed out humans we need to be reminded to play, sing, laugh, hug a tree, smell the flowers, play in the breeze and enjoy this life, Danburite opens the gate to the Light Beings that can lead the way to joy, happiness and bliss.

Danburite activates and opens the third eye, crown and etheric chakras.  It is through this activation of the higher chakras where we connect with the Divine.  With this connection open we gain the knowledge and wisdom needed to fully immerse ourselves on our spiritual path.  We can proceed on the path to enlightenment with confidence, security and complete trust in the unconditional love of Spirit.  Danburite also opens and activates the heart chakra, inspiring feelings of self love.  When the heart center, the physical heart and heart chakra, come into resonance with the upper chakras tremendous healing on an emotional and physical level can occur.  Sending a message of comfort from the brain to the heart with the energy of Danburite reduces stress and anxiety and we begin to experience deep feelings of bliss and inner harmony, leading to better health.

We live in an important time in the evolution of humanity.  In this Age of Light we are being asked by Spirit to raise our individual vibration, heal this planet and set the stage for a new reality.  This new reality will be free of starvation, poverty, fear and lack.  Our government and social systems will change; this is not always an easy transformation.  It is comforting to know that we are supported by the mineral kingdom.  Danburite is a loving friend to have along on the journey.

~ Elemental Forces Of Nature ~

This month we begin a new five part series exploring the elemental forces of nature in conjunction with our  stones and crystals.
Over the course of the next five months we will examine the elements of Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Storm.  We will look at the relationship of these forces to stones and how to incorporate them into our  continuing journey of discovering the healing effects of crystals.  You may be wondering "stones all come from the Earth so they must all be of the Earth element?"  The answer is yes and no.  While most stones do come from our beautiful planet, with the exception of a few that may have "other worldly" origins, further research has shown that minerals carry energies related to other elements as well, many carrying the energies of more than one elemental force.  All of these elements are represented in and upon the Earth herself, Her core, bodies of water, volcanoes, lightning, the air we breathe.  We know that stones carry varying degrees of energetic frequencies and offer that energy to us for a range of healing purposes, such as spiritual, emotional or physical, all of which are associated with the chakras points as well.  Connecting with the energies of the elements can deepen the experience of working with  stones as well as meditation, ritual, divination and dream interpretation, providing additional information, guidance and support.  At this point not every stone can be categorized into the five elemental forces, there is no book with a complete listing, though many are in "The Book of Stones".  As always your individual practice, experience, experiments, trial and error and intuition are encouraged.  Over time it will become clear which stones fall into a particular elemental category as you learn to equate the qualities of your stones and crystals with the characteristics of the elemental forces of Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Storm.
(Much of the information provided in this series  will be based in part on the work of Naisha Ashian, internationally known healer, creator of The Crystal Ally Cards, Crystal Resonance Therapy,  the Primus Activation Healing Technique and co-author of The Book of Stones.  For more information about Ms. Ashian visit  www.crystalisinstitute.com)

~ 1.  The Elemental Forces of Nature ~
Part One, Earth

The Earth is a living organism with an electromagnetic field of energy, an aura, just like humans, plants, animals and minerals The Earth's aura reaches out into space about 35,000 miles, ours a mere twelve feet with the most intense about four feet from our physical body.  Like us, our planet is constantly shifting,
